SCA TO INVEST SEK 196 MILLION TO BOOST PRODUCTION

SCA is investing SEK 196 million to increase production of white top kraftliner at its Munksund paper mill in Pitea, Sweden. The project involves the woodroom and the mill's pulping operation.

The investment will allow the mill to increase the capacity of white top kraftliner from 150,000 tons per year to 200,000 tons per year. However, the total production capacity of the mill will not increase as a result of the project.

Munksund paper mill produces 415,000 tonnes of kraftliner per year on one paper machine.

“This is an important step in our development towards more value-added products in Munksund paper mill,” said Mats Nordlander, President Business Area Paper. “The demand is increasing for white kraftliner with excellent printing properties. Through this investment we increase the production of high-value products in Munksund and we can optimize the production of kraftliner in the Obbola paper mill. Thereby we improve the competitiveness of both mills."

Currently, the woodroom in at the Munksund mill debarks softwood and hardwood pulpwood in batches. Through the investment, the flow of softwood is separated from the flow of hardwood and debarking can be carried out more efficiently with higher quality.

In addition, the mill's capacity to produce hardwood pulp will be increased through a number of measures. The mill will also increase its use of hardwood and reduce its use of softwood.

SCA expects to complete the project in May 2019.
